systems analystSYSTEMS ANALYST SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

The Systems Analyst studies the organization’s current computer systems and procedures (processes) and recommends changes to programs, systems, and planning, to help information technology (IT) operate more efficiently and effectively and meet customer, organizational, and other requirements. They bring business and IT together by understanding – and helping them understand – their needs, capabilities, and limitations.

SYSTEMS ANALYST ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Consult with business managers to determine how best to meet customers – and the organization’s – requirements
  • Lead a team of software designers, software testers, and technical writers; demonstrate leadership qualities
  • Design and develop system and program requirements; develop and communicate overall design approach
  • Determine how existing systems might meet emerging requirements
  • Create software test plans, test scenarios, and test cases
  • Review design changes, update program/system requirements as needed
  • Explain programs and systems to technical writers, for development of technical and/or end-user documentation
  • Stay informed of emerging technologies and determine how they might be useful to the organization

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports directly to the IT Manager. Works in conjunction with business managers and technical staff to facilitate software development.

SYSTEMS ANALYST QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in computer science/IT is required; an MBA (information management) is preferred. 5+ years of experience in software development is required. 1+ years’ experience managing software developers also required; must have demonstrated ability to lead a diverse team of technicians. Knowledge of SDLC a necessity.

Good communication skills and the ability to work well with people at all levels are essential. Strong math, technical, organizational, and management skills. Prior project management experience is preferred.

Prefer a candidate with systems analysis certification. Need Java programming experience. Experience with UML (Rational) is a definite plus.

SYSTEMS ANALYST PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to communicate orally with customers, vendors, management, and coworkers is crucial. Regular use of phone and email for communication is essential. Hearing and vision correctable to within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, receiving ordinary information, and preparing or inspecting documents.

The ability to remain in a stationary position roughly 50% of the time, as well as the ability to move about the office occasionally (accessing files/storage, office equipment, computers and other office productivity devices, attending meetings, etc.), is required.

Using a computer while sitting for extended periods is common. No heavy lifting is expected, though occasional exertion of about 20 lbs. of force (e.g., picking up and carrying binders, laptops) may be required. Good manual dexterity required to use common office equipment (e.g., computers, mobile devices, calculators, copiers, scanners).

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The job is performed indoors in a traditional office setting. Extended periods of sitting while using a computer or other devices are common.
