The Food Safety Auditor conducts periodic food safety audits to determine if the client organization is in compliance with ISO 22000 requirements, for the purpose of certifying the organization’s food safety management system (FSMS) to that standard.
FOOD SAFETY AUDITOR ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Observe the organization’s food preparation, handling, storage, and transportation processes
- Interview food preparation, handling, etc., personnel within the scope of the organization’s FSMS
- Review the organization’s food safety-related records and documents (e.g., receiving records, HACCP plan)
- Issue a formal audit report to the organization and certification body, as well as issue ISO 22000 certificate
- Arrange travel means, lodging, etc., when traveling to a client site
- Issue accurate, complete invoice to client in a timely manner
- Conduct timely follow-ups with client
Report results of food safety audits (audit report) to the organization’s Board of Directors and/or to top management.
FOOD SAFETY AUDITOR QUALIFICATIONS
A bachelor of science degree in food science or a related discipline is required. 10+ years of experience in food processing also required, with five of those in a supervisory position. Experience in food safety training to individuals or small groups is preferred.
Must have demonstrated ability to lead a diverse team of auditors and food processing/handling personnel. Good communication skills and the ability to work well with people at all levels are essential. Strong analytical, organizational skills are required.
Candidate must have current certification as an ISO 22000 food safety auditor. Should have participated in 10 or more complete food safety audits, serving as lead auditor on at least two of those occasions.
FOOD SAFETY AUDITOR PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to communicate orally with customers, vendors, management, and coworkers is crucial. Regular use of phone and email for communication is essential. Hearing and vision correctable to within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, receiving ordinary information, and preparing or inspecting documents.
The ability to remain in a stationary position roughly 50% of the time, as well as the ability to move about the office and plant (accessing files/storage, processing equipment, etc.), is required.
Using a computer while sitting for extended periods is not uncommon, though frequent moving about auditee’s facilities will occur. Must also be able to position self to test and inspect client’s equipment in place, at times.
No heavy lifting is expected, though occasional exertion of 10+ lbs. of force (e.g., picking up and carrying binders, laptops, gages/testers) may be required. Good manual dexterity required to use common office equipment (e.g., computers, mobile devices, calculators, copiers, scanners).
The job is performed indoors in a traditional office setting or in a food processing, storage, etc., facility. Some sitting while using a computer or other device, interspersed with moving about office and processing, storage, loading/unloading, and other facilities.
