SECURITY DIRECTOR SUMMARY

The Security Director manages a staff of security guards and surveillance personnel, who are responsible for patrolling and inspecting the organization’s property against theft, fire, vandalism, and terrorism, as well as ensuring the safety of personnel and visitors while on or about the organization’s premises.

SECURITY DIRECTOR ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee physical safety and security of the organization’s facilities/property and people – employees, vendors, contractors, shippers, and visitors.
  • Lead a team of security personnel in their day-to-day duties and responsibilities.
  • Ensure that security staff is adequately equipped and trained.
  • Develop training plans for security personnel and maintain security training records.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a physical security (security risk management) plan for all facilities.
  • Manage and report to top management on security incidents and threats.
  • Oversee and report on security checks/surveillance/monitoring.
  • Authorize access to facilities and ensure that access is controlled.
  • Maintain and review security records; periodically report on trends, anomalies, and concerns.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports directly to the organization’s chief executive (President). Works in conjunction with Information Security staff to ensure security of IT facilities and operations.

SECURITY DIRECTOR QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, psychology, or other suitable field of study is required, as well as 5+ years of experience in security. 1+ years of management experience is preferred. Preference will be given to those who have civilian/military police experience.

Must have demonstrated the ability to lead a diverse team of security/police personnel. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with people of all levels and backgrounds are essential. Strong organizational and management skills are a must. Knowledge of, experience with physical security systems (hardware and software) a plus.

ASIS or other similar security organization certifications (e.g., CPP, PSP, LPC) are desirable.

SECURITY DIRECTOR PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to communicate orally with management, employees, visitors, fire/police, disaster management & recovery personnel, etc., is crucial. Regular use of phone and email for communication is essential. Hearing and vision correctable to within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, receiving ordinary information, and preparing or inspecting documents.

The ability to remain in a stationary position roughly 50% of the time, as well as the ability to move about the facility (patrolling, performing security checks, etc.) – sometimes rapidly – is required.

Using a computer (generating, reviewing reports, etc.) while sitting for extended periods is common. Must also be able to position self to maintain and inspect security equipment, including under tables and desks.

Occasional heavy lifting (e.g., injured persons) may be expected; prefer candidates who are in good physical condition and within acceptable weight range. Good manual dexterity required to use common office equipment (e.g., computers, mobile devices).

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The job is performed indoors and outdoors in a variety of settings. Extended periods of sitting while using a computer or other devices are not uncommon.
