The Local Area Network, or LAN, Administrator oversees the day-to-day operation of the organization’s local area network. The LAN Administrator organizes, supervises, and oversees installation and support of the organization’s LAN, including network segments, intranets, and other data communication systems.

LAN ADMINISTRATOR ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee installation, maintenance, repairs, and upgrading of LAN hardware and software.
  • Develop and maintain local area network map(s); maintain LAN inventory (catalog).
  • Help Information Security (aka, Info Sec) to ensure LAN security
  • Ensure that LAN is in continuous operation.
  • Collect and analyze data to evaluate LAN performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Help tech support resolve LAN-related problems.
  • Solve LAN problems quickly and effectively when a user or an automated monitoring system lets them know about a problem.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports directly to the Network & Computer Systems Administrator. Works in conjunction with IT Admin and Info Sec to ensure proper functioning, utilization, and security of the LAN.

LAN ADMINISTRATOR QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or information technology is required; three (3) years’ work experience in systems administration is also required. Systems administration certification (e.g., CompTIA, Cisco) is desirable.

Must have demonstrated above-average analytical and problem-solving abilities. Must be capable of leading a team of computer / network technicians. Good oral and written communication skills are a must. Previous LAN management experience is highly desired.

LAN ADMINISTRATOR PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to communicate orally with customers, vendors, management, and technicians. Regular use of phone and email for communication is essential. Hearing and vision correctable to within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, receiving ordinary information, preparing or inspecting equipment, manuals, and other documents, and some LAN tools.

The ability to remain in a stationary position roughly 50% of the time, as well as the ability to move about the office occasionally (accessing files/storage, office equipment, computers and other office productivity devices, attending meetings, etc.), is required.

Using a computer while sitting for extended periods is common. Must also be able to position self to maintain LAN equipment, including under and behind tables and desks.

Heavy lifting (50+ lbs) may be expected occasionally. Good manual dexterity required to use common office equipment (e.g., computers, mobile devices, calculators) and LAN tools (e.g., network testers, wire strippers, crimpers)

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The job is performed indoors in a traditional office setting. Some extended periods of sitting while using a computer or other device.
