Industrial EngineerINDUSTRIAL ENGINEER SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

The Industrial Engineer determines and applies the most efficient and cost-effective methods for industrial production within the organization. They design systems that integrate material, equipment, information, and people in overall production processes.

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Eliminate or reduce waste in production and related processes (applies lean manufacturing tools and techniques, six sigma, etc.).
  • Choose machinery and other equipment and arranges these items in the most effective layout in the manufacturing plant (i.e., lean).
  • Develops methods that will be used to accomplish all of the tasks involved in production, including devising systems for quality control, distribution, and inventory.
  • Determines the functions and responsibilities of workers and devises and implements evaluation procedures; recommends methods for improving employee efficiency.
  • Evaluates potential for or actual physical harm throughout production processes; redesigns, relocates, or replaces equipment, as necessary.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to Engineering Manager. Works with production and logistics management, as needed.

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in engineering is required. Should have an aptitude for mathematics, physical science, and computer applications. Must have strong background in algebra, trigonometry, and calculus; statistics; production systems planning; and manufacturing systems design. 2+ years of project management experience is preferred.

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to communicate well orally with management and coworkers is important. Regular use of a variety of measuring tools, the telephone and email for communication is essential. Standing or sitting for extended periods is common. Hearing and vision within normal ranges is important for conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect building plans, blueprints, and technical drawings.

Heavy lifting is not expected. Exertion of up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally is required. Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computer terminals, calculator, copiers, and FAX machines or measuring tools is required.

Good math and reasoning ability is essential. Must be capable of applying statistical calculations, geometry, trigonometry, algebra, linear equations, and other analytics; must also be able to understand and utilize industrial engineering drawings.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The job is performed indoors in a variety of settings including the office, manufacturing (production) floor, and warehouse. Exposure to loud noises, dust, dirt, and smoke may occur. Protective safety clothing may occasionally be required including appropriate clothing, shoes, gloves, hardhat, and goggles as needed. Activities include extended periods of standing, sitting, or kneeling and extensive work with measuring devices and other machinery.
