COMPUTER PROGRAMMER SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS
Designs, programs, and tests software. Maintains existing programs and provides support when a program fails or when errors are detected in the output. Provides detailed output reports as required as a one-time request or as needed on a periodic basis.
COMPUTER PROGRAMMER ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receives the system requirements from the Systems Analyst. This may consist of flowcharts and identification of files to be used in the system and identification of reports to be created.
- Designs all necessary detailed flow charts and input-output forms/reports.
- Collects necessary data and translates the problem definition into a computer program, applying knowledge of advanced programming languages.
- Compiles program(s) and check for coding errors.
- Analyze the results of programs and performs changes or corrections as needed.
- Conduct friendly and unfriendly testing. Keep detailed records of revisions and modifications of programs.
- Gathers data and helps business managers plan the collection, storage, and management of data to provide useful information for managing the business.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Senior Programmer and works in conjunction with programmers, analysts, and machine operators.
COMPUTER PROGRAMMER QUALIFICATIONS
A bachelor’s degree in computer science or engineering is required; 2+ years of work experience in Java, C# preferred. Good communications skills and the ability to work well with people is essential.
COMPUTER PROGRAMMER PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to communicate orally with IT management, other programmers, system designers, and even end users is crucial. Regular use of the telephone, email, and other means of communication (e.g., IM) is essential. Sitting for extended periods is common. Hearing and vision within normal ranges is helpful for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect documents.
No heavy lifting is expected. Exertion of up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally may be required. Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computer terminals, calculator, copiers, and FAX machines.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The job is performed indoors in a traditional office setting. Activities include extended periods of sitting and extensive work at a computer monitor. This job includes the potential of working irregular hours and the possibility of mandatory on-call availability to troubleshoot production problems.
