Civil EngineerCIVIL ENGINEER SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

Uses knowledge of material science, engineering theory, economics, and demographics to devise, construct, and keep up physical structures.

CIVIL ENGINEER ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Devise an overall design for the proposed project, including estimating cost, supervising feasibility studies, and site investigations.
  • Verifies accuracy of drawings and checks the plan for quantities of materials to order and correct as necessary.
  • Schedules work to be done on the site, maintain surveys of the progress of the work, and supervise labor during construction to ensure work is completed correctly and efficiently.
  • Submits material requirements needed for construction to Purchasing Department and follows up on delivery and verifies the accuracy of shipments received.
  • Chooses machines and equipment to be used for the construction.
  • Performs periodic inspections of the structure after it is complete and institutes a maintenance schedule for the upkeep of the structure.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Engineering Manager or Project Manager.

CIVIL ENGINEER QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required; a master’s degree is preferred, as is a professional engineer’s (P.E.) license.

CIVIL ENGINEER PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to communicate orally with project management, coworkers, vendors, and contractors is important. Regular use of a variety of measuring tools, the telephone and e-mail for communication is essential. Standing or sitting for extended periods is common. Hearing and vision within normal ranges is important for conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect building plans, blueprints, and drawings.

Heavy lifting is not expected. Exertion of up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally is required. Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computer terminals, calculator, copiers, and FAX machines or measuring tools is required.

Good math and reasoning ability is essential. Able to apply statistical calculations, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, and sampling theory as well as geometry, trigonometry, algebra, linear equations, and other analytics as required. Able to understand and utilize architectural or engineering drawings, utilize financial reports and legal documents to conduct business.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The job may be performed both indoors in an office setting and outdoors in a variety of settings including possible hazardous conditions on and around scaffolding or a construction site. Exposure to loud noises, dust, dirt, and smoke may occur. Protective safety clothing may occasionally be required including appropriate construction grade boots, gloves, hardhat, goggles, pants and shirt as needed. Activities include extended periods of standing, sitting or kneeling and extensive work with measuring devices and other machinery.
