Maintenance ManagerMAINTENANCE MANAGER SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

The Maintenance Manager oversees the day-to-day maintenance and repair operations of the organization’s facilities, equipment, and machinery through planning, coordinating, and directing all maintenance activities to ensure machine reliability and minimize unexpected downtime.

MAINTENANCE MANAGER ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage a team of maintenance technicians to carry out tasks such as cleaning, lubrication, inspections, servicing, providing repairs, and replacing spare parts.
  • Plan, determine optimal utilization of maintenance workers and equipment to meet maintenance goals.
  • Determine if new maintenance equipment, methods, or tools are needed.
  • Ensure that maintenance stays on schedule and within budget.
  • Ensure that maintenance technicians are recording accurate and detailed information in work orders for accurate work history and data-driven decisions.
  • Provide necessary training to machine operators and maintenance technicians for improving asset reliability.
  • Ensure that regular inspections of machinery are conducted to identify hidden problems.
  • Plan and manage maintenance budget while keeping track of expenses.
  • Ensure that spare parts, components, and tools needed for maintenance are always available by ordering, forecasting, and monitoring material inventories.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and optimize the organization’s maintenance management plan in accordance with its goals to improve uptime and minimize costs.
  • Coordinate maintenance with manufacturing, operations, or supply chain, and other departments, as well as external providers.
  • Help ensure that customer, statutory, standards, and internal requirements are met or exceeded.
  • Hire, train, and evaluate maintenance workers; monitor workers to ensure they meet performance and safety requirements.
  • Analyze maintenance data and identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities for improvement; identify and utilize methods of making maintenance process more efficient and effective (reducing waste, using lean).
  • Write maintenance reports and present to top management.
  • Direct corrections (corrective action) of any maintenance or manufacturing problems that may arise; work with Quality Manager in development and implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).

Reports directly to the Operations/Plant Manager.

MAINTENANCE MANAGER QUALIFICATIONS

Must have at least a high school diploma or GED certificate. Prefer someone with experience in industrial technology, postsecondary coursework in mechanical drawing, mathematics, blueprint reading, CNC, and/or electronics. Must have a good understanding of electricity, electronics, hydraulics, and computer programming.

Ideal candidate will have an associate degree or the equivalent experience in industrial maintenance. Industrial maintenance certification(s) would be a plus. A bachelor’s degree (e.g., business administration, industrial engineering) and ten years of experience in a manufacturing environment, three as a plant manager, are preferred.

Must have demonstrated ability to lead a diverse team of maintenance workers.  Good communication skills and the ability to work well with people at all levels, educational background, etc., are essential.  Strong organizational and managerial skills required. Project management experience is a must; candidates with project management certification will be given preference.  Some training experience (e.g., manufacturing tools & techniques, standards, regulations) will also be helpful.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE MAINTENANCE MANAGER

Ability to communicate orally with customers, vendors, management, and coworkers is crucial.  Regular use of phone and email for communication is essential.  Hearing and vision correctable to within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, receiving ordinary information, and preparing or inspecting documents.

The ability to remain in a stationary position roughly 50% of the time, as well as the ability to move about the manufacturing facilities (access files/storage, office equipment, computers, and other productivity devices; plan, organize, and attend manufacturing meetings; attend to various issues on the shop floor; etc.), is required.

Using a computer while sitting for extended periods is common, though some time will be spent in the manufacturing area, where eye, ear, and other protection (safety gear) are required.

Some heavy lifting can be expected. Good manual dexterity required to use maintenance equipment (e.g., computers, testers, gages, hand tools). Protective gear, except for safety shoes, is supplied by the organization. Safety training takes place upon hire and annually thereafter.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The job is primarily performed indoors in a traditional office or manufacturing setting, though much time will be spent in the manufacturing facility. Extended periods of sitting while using a computer or other productivity devices are common.
