LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE (LPN) SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

Provide basic patient care under the direction of registered nurses and doctors.

LPN ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administers basic nursing care, including changing dressings, assisting patients with personal care, inserting catheters or preparing patients for office visits.
  • Monitors patients’ health by taking temperature, pulse and blood pressure. Keeps records on patients’ health.
  • Provides for the basic comfort of patients, helping them bathe or dress, or move around the facility.
  • Educates family members how to care for relatives; help deliver, care for, and feed infants; collect samples for testing and do routine laboratory tests; or feed patients who need help eating.
  • Discusses health care with patients and listens to their concerns.
  • Monitors and reports patients’ status to registered nurses and doctors.
  • Assists with the preparation of the examining rooms and the sterilization of instruments.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Works under the direct supervision of the Nursing Department, head nurse or charge nurse and in collaboration with physicians.

LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE QUALIFICATIONS

A certificate in practical nursing from an accredited practical nursing program is required. Current state licensing as a practical nursing (LPN or LVN) is required. Good communications skills and the ability to work well with people is essential.

LPN PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The person in this position frequently communicates with patients and staff regarding medical treatments or therapies. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

Activities require the ability to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time, occasionally move about inside the office to access files or office equipment, operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, hand held devices, copy machine, and computer printer, and operate and monitor various medical equipment. Must be able to constantly position self to maintain equipment, including under tables and desks.

Some heavy lifting is expected. Exertion of up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally may be required to turn or move patients. Good manual dexterity for the use of common office and medical equipment such as computer terminals, heart monitors, or blood pressure machines as well as the insertion and removal of catheters, needles, or nasal cannulas.

Good reasoning ability is required to solve a wide range of medical and emergency problems. Able to apply algebra and other analytics as required. Able to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses. Able to understand and utilize management reports, medical charts and other documents to conduct business. Ability to work rotating shifts.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The job is performed indoors in a traditional medical office or hospital setting. Exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions as well as loud noises, unpleasant odors and liquids may occur. Protective safety equipment may be required including appropriate clothing, shoes, gloves, and goggles as needed.
