Goals are attainable if based on realistic business objectives. Busienss objective can only be realistically set through setting the vision of the Organization in its perspective. Vision falls in perspective when the mission of the Organization is clear to all staff - management and non-management. An unclear mission leads to a vague business purpose that dispirit the goals. Often, goals disintegrate because of lack of cohesiive responsibility that goes hand in hand with the goal players.

In your article on SMART goals the author noted that sometimes people refer to the "R" as Realistic but the author found it redundant to "Attainable".

The "R" can be referred to as "Realistic" when the "A" is defined as "Actionable". "Actionable" is when the person given the goal has the authority through their job description and the capability to acheive the goal.

Some times in my class I refer to "SMARTR" goals. The second R makes reference to the need for goals to be reward based. In the absence of a reward, goals simply become suggestions.

Just a thought
