Innovation and Change
Question of the month: Why is change so important for Innovation?
After covering sales and marketing for much February and March, our focus in April was on innovation and change. Innovation means being willing to look at what you’re doing from a fresh perspective or to think outside the box. Innovation fuels improvement: improved products and features, improved methods, and improved knowledge.
How do you Embrace Change
Innovation brings change. Change is something we all frequently fear. Change from implementing tools like lean thinking, six sigma, or theory of constraints brings uncertainty that, in turn, leads to anxiety. These are natural reactions, but it is important to recognize and manage what fuels our fears.

What does it Take to Fuel Innovation
The U.S. has a strong history of innovation. The Europeans who came to the U.S. in the 17th and the 18th century were not happy with the status quo and were willing to risk it all for the opportunities they could have in a new world. The pioneering spirit carried on through western expansion and even through the industrial revolution and the start of the information age. Several cultural values have helped continue the pioneering spirit such as individualism, a focus on achievement, and our sense of a land of abundance and opportunity.

Are You Ready for Change
What is the point of talking about change? Why do you need to be willing to embrace change? Well, the answer to that question is simple; change is coming. It is inevitable and those who are not ready to ride the tide of change will probably be swept under by it. The constant innovation that takes place and the resulting change means changes in people’s lives, including their work and jobs. Change is coming. So the question is should we resist change or embrace it?

Innovation means thinking or doing something new, but a concept that always coexists with innovation is change. Along side the history of innovation in the U.S. is a history of people who were willing to let go of the past and embrace the new. They were willing to leave their homes and venture to a new world, and then to settle new territories time and time again, and to fight for independence and form their own government.
Our first article in April, The Softer Side of Sales, was a continuation of the sales and marketing article series. It discussed the sales process and argued that ultimately sales is a relentless pursuit of numbers. What does your sales pipeline look like, in terms of suspects, prospects and leads? How many calls do you need to make to get the necessary number of qualified leads? How many sales calls do you need to make to close the needed number of sales?
On That Note
Answer to this month’s question:
Innovation means thinking or doing something new, which inevitably means letting go of something else. Alongside the history of innovation in the U.S. is a history of people who were willing to let go of the past and embrace the new. They were willing to leave their homes and venture to a new world, and then to settle new territories time and time again, and to fight for independence and form their own government.
Fighting the natural forces of change is extremely difficult. Information systems, robotics, wireless technologies are really just starting to change our world, and the changes will likely start to come even more fast and furious. Changes are coming, and most likely they are coming to your field. Are you going to look for them and be ready for them? Or are you going to ignore them and resist?
