Supply Chains and Value Chains
Question of the month: How can you benefit by converting your supply chains into value chains?
February was a short month and we focused our two main articles on supply chains. Understanding your supply chain is very important for sustained business growth. Focusing beyond your customers and suppliers to their customers and suppliers enables you to maintain a strong bond and a relationship based on broader understanding rather than individual components like price alone.
Competitive Supply Chains
You supply chain consists of your suppliers, your customers and yourself—the producer. It is a team too and, in order to be competitive, you need to lead your supply chain as a team. Focusing too much on your company leads to sub-optimization, which can hurt your teammates in the supply chain and can lead to reduced competitive advantage in the market.

Supply Chain vs. Value Chain
Your extended supply chain consists of your supply chain and beyond—your supplier’s suppliers and your customer’s customers. Your extended supply chain is so important because it helps you increase your overall understanding of value, which, in turn, leads to proactive measures and preventive actions. By focusing on the links farther down the chain, you can increase your reaction time and become proactive.

Reader Feedback
You must have noticed that we made some changes in our homepage (www.bizmanualz.com) in February. The first change was implemented on February 10 and a revised version was made live on February 23. Based on your implicit and expressed feedback, we felt that the first change was a little too text heavy for some of our visitors. We feel that the second change is closer to the liking. We would greatly welcome any comments about based on navigational and web design issues of our website. Just reply to this email or leave your comments online. As always, thank you very much for all the feedback you have given us.
On That Note
Answer to this month’s question:
Converting your supply chains into value chains can be a powerful business strategy. Supply chains consist of weak bonds that can be broken easily by a new supplier. Value chains are made of much stronger bonds and are harder to break. Value chains are based on a much greater understanding of your customers and suppliers because you are looking farther beyond your customers and suppliers only.
