ISO defines a process as a “set of interrelated or interacting activities which transforms inputs into outputs”. Accounts receivable is a series of steps that transforms invoices into cash. Would this not fit the definition of a process? A process map illustrates the sequence and interaction of the transformational activities. It can be used for any function, process, procedure, work instruction, business model, system, or whatever term you would want to use. It does not require a focus on being more specific to the product being offered. A process map is a diagram for communicating the activities. It serves no purpose to narrow the definition. Quite the opposite, a process map can be used in a wide variety of situations. I started using them when I was in software development and we called them flowcharts.

Step #2 is not a process map of core processes. Rather, it is a map of core functions. A core process would touch these functions, but it would be something more specific to the product being offered, not the supporting functions.
