In September, our articles covered IT or Information Technology. The business world is constantly being driven by technology. New regulations such as Sarbanes Oxley require you to align your business processes with your technology. And technology is getting cheaper all the time.
Technological Advancements
and Business Management
Technological performance is doubling every year and yet the cost of that performance actually falls so the result is more bang for your buck. The question is, how are you using this technology to release the growth in your business, improve your processes, and deliver better results?

Information Deployment
Information deployment is about how you create, capture, deliver, use and measure your business information. It is the strategic differentiator that your business processes require. Information technology is now a commodity, but your business processes are your business. Today’s information interactions mandate that your technology enable business processes, not just move data.

Business Processes Management
Corporate strategy changes over time, but always requires the alignment of people and processes in order to realize the mission of the organization. In the past, IT departments have delivered the systems. But now, IT needs to move beyond the systems focus and coordinate with the people in your organization for better business process management.

Information technology, in one way or the other, has become an integral part of most organizations. However, as technology becomes cheaper—almost to the point of being commoditized, IT itself is not sufficient to establish a strategic advantage for your organization. Rather, it is how IT is tied with your business processes that matters more than the technology that enables your processes.
To learn more about using process improvement programs for your organization attend the next How to Align a System of People and Processes for Results class. If you are eager to learn more about creating more order out of the chaos you are feeling at work then the How to Create Well-Defined Processes class is right for you. ISO 9000 Quality Auditor classes are forming now for Internal Auditor or Lead Auditor.

On That Note
Answer to this month's question:
Yes, the cost of Information Technology has been falling almost as fast as the increase in performance. This puts technology at the reach of virtually anybody making IT a commodity. Therefore, it is not the raw investment in IT that provides your organization an advantage, it is how you use the IT infrastructure that matters much more. Strategic advantage is more about how you use IT to manage and your business processes. After all, IT is a commodity, but your business processes are your business.
We will continue our discussion of Information Technology in October. We will discuss accelerating returns in the next article and start building a case for establishing strong IT policies and procedures.
Let us know if you'd like any specific topic addressed in our future article-series.
